Leeds United confirm midfielder’s move to Italy

Ronaldo Vieira’s move from Leeds United to Sampdoria has been confirmed by the club.

Midfielder Ronaldo Vieira emerged as a target for Italian side Sampdoria about three days ago, as Italian newspaper Secolo XIX reported La Samp were weighing up a move for the Leeds United midfielder.

A deal has moved along quickly, and Vieira’s departure has been confirmed by the club this evening in a Twitter post.

Vieira was pictured arriving back in England yesterday with the Sampdoria squad ahead of their pre-season friendlies with Premier League sides Watford and Fulham, and the deal has now been confirmed.

Sampdoria have recently lost their star midfielder Lucas Torreira to Premier League side Arsenal in a deal worth £30m. Ronaldo Vieira comes in from United as a replacement for the Uruguayan midfielder, for a suspected fee of £7m.

Secolo XIX wrote that Sampdoria had been scouting Vieira throughout pre-season. The 20 year-old has already made 68 appearances for The Whites after breaking into the first team in 2016. The midfielder has represented England at an international level, playing for the U20s and U21s.

West Ham’s Pedro Obiang was being eyed up by La Samp, with the Hammers demanding a fee of £9m to prize the midfielder away. However, as a deal for the Spanish midfielder stalled throughout the transfer window, the Italian club grew tired and opted at look for different options.
