Sheffield United emerge as surprise favourite for Liverpool starlet

Sheffield United have jumped ahead of Aston Villa in the race for Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

Sheffield United have leaped ahead of Championship rivals Aston Villa in the race for Liverpool attacker Ben Woodburn according to Alan Nixon. It was widely reported that Villa were set to seal the signing of Woodburn, but Blades have come out of the blue and could snatch the youngster away from Steve Bruce.

The decision will be made by the youngster’s parent club Liverpool, with United and Villa hopeful they will win the race for the Welsh youngster. Woodburn broke into the Liverpool first team in 2017, featuring 11 times for the first team and scoring once against Leeds United.

At just 18, Woodburn has represented Wales U15s, U16s, U17s, U19s and the senior team. Chris Coleman gave Woodburn his international début at 17, and opened his account against Austria in a 1-0 victory.

The Wales youngster has not travelled with the Liverpool squad on their pre-season camp to Evian, with his short-term future yet to be resolved. Woodburn signed a new contract at Liverpool last year, but manager Jurgen Klopp is keen to send the attacker out on loan to gain some valuable first team experience.

Wigan Athletic have also been credited with interest in the Liverpool youngster, but seem to be behind Sheffield United and Aston Villa in the race to seal the youngsters signature. Even if a deal stretches on, the window for loan deals doesn’t close until August 31st, but a deal is expected to be completed sooner rather than later.
