Leeds to pay biggest fee for player since Robbie Fowler in 2001 – Striker medical tomorrow

Leeds United fans have been through it all. In terms of clubs who have put their fans through the hardest of times they are at the top of the list. Rangers, Portsmouth and Coventry can all argue that but in terms of where Leeds were, and went it was terrible.

The club have been slowly improving for years and now the club are on the brink of making their biggest signing since Robbie Fowler in 2001 (Andrew Dalton, “stats”). Patrick Bamford will undergo his medical tomorrow ahead of his £7 million move from Middlesbrough, a fee that is expected to rise to £10 million. Bamford will become Leeds’ biggest signing in 17 years, for Leeds United fans that is a huge deal.

Leeds have entered the transfer market late but they’ve entered with a huge bang. Barry Douglas, the best left-back in the division signed a three-year-deal yesterday in a £3 million move from Championship winners Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds are still expected to go for a winger and another midfielder. Chelsea duo Jamal Blackman and Lewis Baker have also joined on loan for the season.

The days of Leeds’ big spending have been long gone. Robbie Fowler, Seth Johnson, Rio Ferdinand and many more, the fees we paid for players were huge at the time and we know where that got us. I, like many have been critical of recent owners and that includes Andrea Radrizzani. We’re very protective over the club and who can blame us? When Marcelo Bielsa was brought in I said clean slate for all, and despite the wait, and it has been frustrating, we seem to be improving the squad bit by bit with real quality.

The three players brought in so far have improved us, I actually expect Lewis Baker to start over Samu Saiz next week based on pre-season, Barry Douglas is the best left-back in the division and Jamal Blackman has replaced Andy Lonergan and Felix Wiedwald to compete with Baily Peacock-Farrell. He brings more than the pair combined. Add Patrick Bamford up front who will replace Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Caleb Ekuban and it’s a huge improvement. A couple more of this nature and it will have been a fantastic summer.
