Bolton confirm signing of former Sunderland man Marc Wilson

Another day, another free signing for Bolton Wanderers. Transfer windows haven’t been easy for the Trotters in recent years, having to largely rely on uncovering the latest hidden gem for as cheap as possible.

The BBC confirmed that the 30-year-old Marc Wilson has signed a one year deal at the Macron, following his release from newly-relegated Sunderland.

Wilson joins the likes of Erhun Oztumer, Jason Lowe and Clayton Donaldson from the free transfer list, with Bolton looking to build upon last years heroic, last-gasp survival from relegation.

Trotters fans will be hoping that they are not in for another relegation dogfight, the experience in their squad is undeniable, combine this with Sammy Ameobi and Erhun Oztumer’s deadly antics in the final third and Bolton may be a side to watch come the new year.

A promotion push will be optimistic, to say the least, but the Trotters may seek confidence in Millwall’s defiance to be rolled over last year and use it to inspire themselves. At this level, squad familiarity and a good harmony can be pivotal, as Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City proved better than anyone last year.

An uphill battle next season looks to be the general consensus for Parkinson’s men, but there are positives to seek refuge in. Key players such as Adam Le Fondre and Sammy Ameobi looked destined for another season with Bolton meaning that if anything, the club have a good foundation to build off.

The Republic of Ireland international brings bags of experience to Phil Parkinson’s side, having racked up 25 international caps, Wilson has also gained over 130 Premier League appearances in his time at Stoke.

In other news on the transfer front at the Macron, Mark Beevers is said to be Steven Gerrard’s new number one target in central defence, after the Glaswegians failed to meet Millwall’s demands for Jake Cooper. Could Wilson’s arrival be a signal of intent regarding Beevers’ future?
