Coventry City eye up League One striker to replace McNulty

Coventry City are interested in bringing in Portsmouth striker Conor Chaplin to replace the now departed Marc McNulty, according to The Portsmouth News.

After Marc McNulty left for Reading earlier in the window, Coventry City will be looking for a replacement to fill the void after last season’s joint-top scorer left for Championship club Reading.

Chaplin is the man identified as McNulty’s replacement, but Pompey manager Kenny Jackett is reluctant to let the 21 year-old leave after the club’s move for Cheltenham striker Mo Eisa fell through. The Fratton Park club had been pursuing Eisa along with Sunderland and Peterborough. However, The 23-goal striker is set to move to Bristol City.

Jackett told The Portsmouth News,

“‘I am not going to do that (sell Chaplin without a replacement). We haven’t got that many players, particularly the centre-forwards. It’s not something I am going to do.”

Portsmouth didn’t struggle for goals last season, with Brett Pitman scoring 24 goals in League One last season, and have managed to keep him. Chaplin backed that up with 5 league goals last season, with the majority of his 26 appearances coming off the bench.

On the other hand, Coventry’s search for a goalscorer is a bit more desperate. McNulty – now at Reading – scored 25 of Coventry’s 64 league goals. If City want to retain their League One status, they desperately need to bring in a new goalscorer.

The Sky Blues have been struggling in their search for a new striker. After a frustrating 2-0 friendly loss to Stevenage, manager Mark Robins admitted his frustration with their struggle to bring in a new forward.

In an interview with CoventryLive, Robins said,

“There’s no progress what-so-ever. It’s clearly frustrating because we have got to make things happen.”
