Leeds United battling Premier League trio for Oldham defender Hamer

According to sources such as Alan Nixon (tweet – below), and as reported in the Sun on Sunday (22nd July edition – page 58), Leeds United are casting their attention to Oldham and young defender Tom Hamer.

It has been a threadbare transfer window at Elland Road thus far this summer with only Lewis Baker and Jamal Blackman coming in on loan from Premier League side Chelsea.

There have been no permanent signings up to press, although that could all change if the interest reported by Nixon (below) and in the Sun on Sunday is to be believed.

However, despite Leeds United’s interest, Nixon adds the caveat that the Whites will face a battle for his signature. Sources elsewhere cite that the West Yorkshire club are in competition with three Premier League sides with Everton, Burnley and Brighton said to make up that trio.

18-year-old right-back Hamer, who can also fill in as a centre-back, made the breakthrough at Oldham last season. He appeared in seven League One games for the Lancastrians who were relegated in to League Two.

With his performances catching the eye, and with his potential beginning to shine through, it would not be inconceivable that higher placed sides such as Leeds United and the mentioned Premier League trio would be keeping tabs on the youngster.

Leeds United have, of course, a proven track record of developing youngsters for the first team and beyond at Elland Road. Evidence of that can be found by looking at the likes of Tom Pearce, Kalvin Phillips and Ronaldo Vieira who are starring in the first team.

However, with names such as Everton, Burnley and Brighton also mentioned as being interested, Leeds United fans may want to temper their enthusiasm somewhat.
