Coventry City took a big risk when they cashed in on promotion hero Marc McNulty earlier this month, which let him go to Reading for an undisclosed fee rumoured to be in the region of £1.5million. Ever since that transfer was sanctioned, fans have been crying out for their star man to be replaced.
‘Sparky’ netted 28 times for the Sky Blues last season in all competitions, so understandably fans were sad to see him leave. However they got a good fee for someone unproven in League One, and assuming hated owners SISU give them the funds to replace him, here are five strikers whom Coventry City could sign to be able to compete in the upper echelons of League One this season.

Conor Chaplin
This is the one which the Sky Blues have been linked with the most, however in recent days it appears to have gone cold with Pompey reportedly missing out on Mohamed Eisa. This has meant they perhaps might not be willing to let Chaplin leave with the uncertainty of being able to replace him. However, were Coventry able to twist Kenny Jackett’s hand and complete a deal, they’d be getting a great little player, still aged just 21, he’s got bags of potential.
He didn’t get as much game time at Fratton Park as he perhaps would have liked thanks to the goalscoring form of Brett Pitman, but the former League Two Apprentice of the Year still displayed to fans he was a good player, netting on five occasions. That doesn’t sound too good on the face of it but he was majorly limited to substitute appearances, given regular first team football he could flourish.
2. Danny Rose
Danny Rose was a key part of Mansfield Town’s side which narrowly missed out on the play offs last season, scoring on 17 occasions in all competitions, and City fans will know all about him, having caused them endless troubles at Field Mill. He would slot right into Coventry’s style of play, being the quick nippy goalscorer to play off target men Maxime Biamou and Jonson Clarke-Harris. They might be able to pick him up on the cheap as well with him being in his last year of his contract.
3. Christian Doidge
There is a strong argument to say that League Two newcomers Forest Green wouldn’t have stayed up had it not been for Christian Doidge. The 25 year old hit the twenty goal mark in their survival push, which won’t have gone unnoticed by clubs higher up in the football pyramid, and he could potentially be an option for Coventry if Doidge were to want to try his luck at a higher level. Rovers aren’t expected to compete for promotion this season so a transfer away may be his only way of getting third tier football.
