Bristol City bid £3m for international goalkeeper

News has recently broken that Bristol City’s hunt for a goalkeeper may have led to a bid being placed for current USA international goalkeeper Zack Steffen.

The 6’1″ goalkeeper is currently on the books of Major League Soccer side Columbus Crew, and has impressed greatly during the current season, having conceded just 17 goals in 16 appearances and keeping 7 clean sheets in the process.

The former Freiburg man is only 23-years old so is still very young in terms of goalkeeping so has a lot of room to still improve upon his weaker areas. Steffen made his international début for USA in a friendly in January 2010 against Bosnia. Two of his three senior appearances for USA have resulted in clean sheets for Steffen; the only goal he has conceded at international level was in the 1-1 draw at the Stade de France, in what was France’s final warm up game before their World Cup triumph – a goal which was scored by none other than Kylian Mbappe.

Bristol City have had their problems in the goalkeeping department over recent seasons. Their current number one is Frank Fielding, though his inconsistent performances suggest that Bristol City staff and fans alike would may opt to sign a replacement. Robins manager Lee Johnson has tried and failed to sign replacements for Fielding, signing Schalke goalkeeper Fabian Giefer on loan in the 2016-17 season as well as Ivan Lucic who was signed from Bayern Munich, who now plays for Austria Vienna. Richard O’Donnell was also tried as a long-term replacement for Fielding but the goalkeeping department at Ashton Gate is a tricky one to get right at the moment – maybe Steffen could be the man to change that.
