Sheffield United take former Barnsley goalkeeper on trial

Sheffield United have taken former Barnsley goalkeeper Luke Steele on trial and appeared in their 3-2 pre-season friendly win over Bradford City as reported by the Sheffield Star.

Steele is a veteran goalkeeper who has played all across the leagues since making his debut for Peterborough United all the way back in 1999. He is actually well liked in South Yorkshire as he made over 200 appearances for Barnsley between 2008 and 2014. Steele also had a stint abroad as he spent a few years with Greek side Panathinaikos before returning to England to play for Bristol City.

He is now a free agent after being released by the Robins this summer but could soon sign for Sheffield United after having a trial with them. Alongside fellow trialist, and former Sheffield Wednesday striker, David McGoldrick he played in last night’s 3-2 friendly win over Bradford City and will have hoped to impress head coach Chris Wilder enough to earn a full-time contract with them. He would likely to be a back-up to Dean Henderson after he signed on loan from Manchester United earlier in the summer.

With Steele being on trial at United, there were some murmurings that this meant that Simon Moore would soon be heading to West Bromwich Albion despite their recent signings of Sam Johnstone and Jonathan Bond with these talks intensifying after he didn’t feature in last night’s game. But when asked about this after the match, Wilder said Moore didn’t feature in this match because he hadn’t trained in a while.
