Leeds vs York City – Potential XI – Debuts incoming

The word from the Leeds camp is that those first-team players who didn’t travel on Tuesday night to Forest Green will be involved at York City tomorrow. There are a few who will expect to play and that means debuts for new signings, old signings and potentially young players from the under 23’s. Some may feature again after Tuesday’s win.

We’ll stick with the Bielsa formation which was a 4-1-4-1 in reality, a holding midfielder and one supporting Samu Saiz who played in the number ten role. I wasn’t a million miles off with the side the other night, but this one is more difficult to predict. Once the season starts it will be the “preferred XI” before games, rather than trying to predict the starting team.

Potential XI

GK – Jamal Blackman – Almost certainly a start for Blackman tomorrow after Monday’s signing. Phil Hay had expected him to play some part at Forest Green but Baily Peacock-Farrell got the 90 minutes and it’s Blackman’s turn. The defence in front of him is another issue entirely.

RB – Luke Ayling – Options are limited at the back. Berardi will probably have to play at centre-back again unless Hugo Diaz steps in so for now it’s Ayling. Bryce Hossanah is the other options at right-back but he’s with the under 23’s at the moment.

CB – Gaetano Berardi –  The defenders are going to get minutes into the legs because there is such a lack of numbers. With Pontus Jansson still not involved it’s Berardi playing in that role. Looked comfortable on Tuesday, Bielsa said he likes he can play across the back line.

CB – Liam Cooper – Again, until Jansson is back and if Hugo Diaz isn’t to be involved this is the partnership. The other option could be a central midfielder or Luke Ayling in that position. The pair were steady against Forest Green.

LB – Tom Pearce – Stuart Dallas had a very good game in the left-back role on Tuesday but Pearce will surely get the nod at York. A talented youngster who signed a new four-year-deal and went to France with the England under 23’s, one to watch this season.

CDM – Ronaldo Vieira – Kalvin Phillips played a defensive role on Tuesday and that seems like a one-man job if that side was set out the way Bielsa wants to go forward. Vieira will play that role over the link between the lines which Forshaw played if history is anything to go by.

CM – Yosuke Ideguchi – The Japanese midfielder has been promoted to the first-team by Bielsa in training and needs to be given a chance to see how good he is. Bielsa may want to give him an hour or so, Forshaw is the man to play this role in the season though.

AMR – Lewis Baker – There wasn’t a set system going forward. Roofe was the most advanced but even he drifted into wide areas. Saiz and Hernandez floated around and Alioski stayed in the wide right area. Baker can drift and link play from wither side or through the middle. It would be a shock not to see him start.

CAM – Samu Saiz – Saiz looked back to his happy self on Tuesday which is great to see because he seemed to lose his way massively since the turn of the year. He could probably do with some more minutes in the legs, he didn’t play much football towards the end of last season.

AML – Jack Clarke – I would like to see Clarke get a chance but that might not happen. If Bielsa doesn’t see him as breaking into the side he may just use it to give the likes of Alioksi another game from the start. Talented lad, may take the chance if given it.

ST – Tyler Roberts – A big chance will come the way of Roberts and it will be great to see what sort of player we’ve signed. His debut has been a long time coming, the issue is risking him if he isn’t ready to play. The other options are Kemar Roofe and Ryan Edmondson.
