Swansea striker joins Spanish side on season-long loan

Sky Sports have confirmed Swansea City striker Borja Baston has joined La Liga side Alaves on a season-long loan deal.

Swansea City paid a club-record fee for Borja Baston just two seasons ago, but he has failed to make an impression at the Liberty Stadium since arriving. The Spaniard signed for £15.5 million from Atletico Madrid, and went on to make just 18 appearances for the Swans in the Premier League.

Although playing nearly 20 times for Swansea, he scored just one goal before moving on to Malaga last season on-loan. He had a similar record back in La Liga, where he scored two in 20 games, as Malaga finished bottom of the table and were relegated to the Segunda Division.

Baston moves to Alaves off the back of another poor scoring season, and will be looking to reignite his form in front of goal in order to either put himself in the shop window for other clubs, or to play himself back into Swansea’s plans under new manager Graham Potter.

The forward only has two years left on his current contract with the Welsh club, and they may look to offload Baston for a cut-fee price. It is highly unlikely that Swansea will recuperate much of the £15.5 million they forked out to Atletico Madrid in 2016.

Swansea have bolstered their striking options for the upcoming season already. They secured the signature of Sunderland youngster Joel Asoro in a deal worth £2 million earlier in the window, and could yet sign more players for the Championship campaign ahead.
