Stoke City see bid turned down for Aston Villa star

Aston Villa have rejected a £5 million bid from Stoke City for James Chester, according to The Mirror.

The Potters are looking to boost their defence ahead of next season in the Championship and have targeted a move for James Chester.

Their new manager, Gary Rowett, left Derby County to take charge of Stoke in May and is hoping to guide his newly inherited side to an immediate promotion back to the Premier League. Chester, who is 28-years-old, has won promotion to the top flight before with Hull City in 2013.

Stoke have already bolstered their ranks ahead of next season. They have brought in Benik Afobe from Wolves, Adam Federici from AFC Bournemouth and Nigerian midfielder Eghenekaro Etebo. The Potters are now also seeking a replacement for Xherdan Shaqiri, who left them to join Liverpool yesterday. Newcastle United’s Matt Ritchie has been linked.

James Chester appears to be their main defensive target and it will be interesting to see if Stoke come back in with a higher offer. It is no secret that Aston Villa are experiencing financial woes and are in need of some cash to balance their books. They obviously value Chester more than £5 million though.

Chester started his career his career at Manchester United and has since had spells at Carlisle United, Hull City, West Brom and now Villa. He has played in an FA Cup final in the past for Hull and impressed for Villa last season alongside John Terry. He would be a very impressive signing for Stoke.
