Sheffield Wednesday ace linked with shock move to Greece

Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher has been linked with a surprise move abroad to Greece to join Panathinaikos, according to Greek news source Hellas Football.

According to the reports, Panathinaikos are only allowed to sign one non-Greek player over the age of 23 and that player is set to be a striker, with the club’s technical director Nikos Dabizas currently in Sheffield to meet with Fletcher over a potential move.

Last season was a season to forget for the 31-year-old striker, making just nine appearances and scoring just two goals for Sheffield Wednesday in an injury-hit season and with Jos Lukuhay looking to clear out his squad, the 41-time Scotland international could well be on his way this summer.

Fletcher arrived at Hillsborough in 2016 after agreeing on a move from French outfit Marseille, for whom he made just 12 appearances and scored just two goals. A ten goal return from 38 appearances in his first season represented a respectable return, with Fletcher developing a solid strike partnership with Gary Hooper up top.

However, things didn’t quite work out last season and Fletcher was one of many victims of one of the worst injury crises the Championship has ever seen, with almost half of Sheffield Wednesday’s squad on the sidelines.

The Shrewsbury-born striker has never been the most prolific striker around – 13 goals is his best ever seasonal return, achieved at Hibernian during the 2007/08 season – but a move to the Greek top flight could prove a solid career move and Fletcher would adapt well to the drop in standard.
