Leeds United striker permanent exit now all but certain

Phil Hay, the chief football writer for the Yorkshire Evening Post, has revealed that Leeds United striker Marcus Antonsson is set to sign for Swedish side Malmo. They are currently managed by former Leeds United head coach Uwe Rosler, who recently took on the job.

Malmo are currently involved in the qualification rounds for the UEFA Champions League, and have a second leg to contend with on Tuesday, of which they already hold a 3-0 lead. The club will be hoping to get Antonsson on the books by then. Leeds will not stand in the way of a player who has not featured for them for some time.

Malmo have had competition for the 27-year-old. Brescia, who are owned by former Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino, were also keen on the player. Antonsson developed some form during a loan move to Blackburn Rovers in Sky Bet League One last season, helping them win promotion back into the Sky Bet Championship at the first attempt.

Antonsson is of course Swedish and has experience of the top flight in the country from his time at Halmstads and Kalmar. The chance to move back home and be closer to family is seemingly the deciding factor in him making this move.

The player found it hard to make an impact during his stint at Elland Road. He signed permanently in 2016 for a fee believed to be in the region of £2million. He netted only one league goal since that day, starting only six matches in the Championship as well.
