Charlton Athletic have taken Simon Dawkins and Elliott Ward on trial, according to London News Online.
The experienced duo will play for the League One side today in their friendly against Welling United. They will both be hoping to impress Charlton’s caretaker boss, Lee Bowyer, and earn a contract with them.
Simon Dawkins is a familiar name to Championship football fans after he spent two seasons playing for Derby County from 2014 to 2016. The 30-year-old winger is looking for a route back into English football after leaving MLS side San Jose Earthquakes.
The Jamaican international started his career at Tottenham Hotspur and had loan spells at Leyton Orient, San Jose, Aston Villa and Derby County before joining the Rams on a permanent basis in 2014. He then spent two seasons with them in the second tier before returning to America to sign for San Jose permanently in 2016.
Elliott Ward, on the other hand, is the other player hoping to earn a deal with Charlton Athletic. He was released by Blackburn Rovers at the end of the season after spending the latter half of the last campaign on loan at MK Dons.
The 33-year-old is a vastly experienced in the Football League and could be shrewd signing by Charlton. He has previously played for the likes of West Ham United, Coventry City, Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, AFC Bournemouth and Huddersfield Town.
Charlton will be hoping to gain promotion to the Championship next season and the possible signings of Simon Dawkins and Elliott Ward would add more depth to an already strong squad.
