Ipswich Town in the race for former Manchester United man

Ipswich Town are in the race to sign former Manchester United stopper Ben Amos, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The 28-year-old keeper was tipped for big things during his time in the youth ranks at Manchester United but after six loan spells and just one senior appearance in seven years, the Macclesfield-born stopper made the switch to Bolton Wanderers in 2015.

Amos made 40 appearances for the Trotters in his debut season, but has once again spent time out on loan in the last two seasons, with stints at Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic providing varying levels of success.

It was at Charlton last season that Amos made a name for himself as an excellent keeper though, playing every single league match and topping off an outstanding season with an incredible showpiece save in the closing stages of Charlton’s play-off semi-final second leg against Shrewsbury Town.

Shrewsbury were managed by Paul Hurst that day, who is now the manager of Ipswich Town following his summer switch to Portman Road, and the former Grimsby Town boss has clearly expressed an interest in bringing Amos to East Anglia.

However, it is unclear whether Amos would be a direct replacement for or an understudy to popular shot-stopper, Bartosz Bialkowski, who has been routinely linked with a move away from Portman Road this summer following another impressive season with the Tractor Boys.

Bolton boss Phil Parkinson will likely be keen to keep Amos at the Macron Stadium ahead of a tough season, but his future at this point remains unclear.
