5 free agents who would be ideal for the Championship

Modern day football has been marked by the inflation of players price tags, which often makes it difficult for the clubs with lower budgets to bring in big talent on the cheap.

Here, we discuss five players who are available on a free who would fit any Championship club.

1. Joel Ward

It was a surprise to many Palace fans to hear of the news that Joel Ward would depart Selhurst Park and questions will have been asked about the clubs efforts to keep the Englishmen. Ward was one of Palace’s most consistent performers since their return to the Premier League and has racked up an impressive 185 league appearances for the Londoners. It would be an ambitious move for a Championship side to ask for the defender, but not unlikely. Ward could be a big signing for any promotion chasing team.

2. Bakary Sako

Sako is, a player who joined Selhurst Park with big expectations and while he has proved to be a loyal servant to the club, injuries have forced the question of what could have been.

He’s a powerful player on his day and Sako does offer the final product that many wide-players lack. The winger has proved his ability at Championship level before and at 30-years of age, still has something to offer.

3. Robert Huth

Huth is somewhat of a cult-hero amongst Leicester City fans, most notably for his presence alongside Wes Morgan in the Foxes remarkable Premier League winning campaign. Although age isn’t be on his side, experience and leadership are. Huth  wouldn’t just be a solid fixture in any Championship defence, but any young defender would be lucky to learn from the 33-year-old.

4. Yasin Ben El-Mhanni

The young winger was released by Newcastle and has attracted interest from promising European clubs such as Lazio and Benfica, but closer to home, Leeds United and Nottingham Forest are said to want the winger.

The 22-year-old is at an important stage of his career where he must play regularly and a move to either Lazio or Benfica would most likely see him used sporadically or even shipped out on loan for a few seasons.

A move to an English club will be a familiar environment for El-Mhanni and he would have a greater chance of regular football.

5. James Collins

Collins is another veteran defender who has probably passed his best, but who has also shown that experience can take you far. The 34-year-old made 134 Premier League appearances for West Ham and he offers you the leadership that can spearhead any club towards gaining the momentum they need. Collins is said to be a target for West Bromwich Albion.
