Reading release veteran striker by mutual consent

The 36-year-old signed for Reading in January 2016 and seemed to be enjoying his time at Reading. Despite saying he was going to retire this summer, he ended up being persuaded to stay with Reading and signed with the club for another year. But it seems to be a move that both sides have regretted. The Royals did not use Kermorgant in their opening two friendlies and have now come to terms with his release.

Following his release, Kermorgant said: “During my time at Reading, I have experienced both the highs and lows of football – the excitement of a third-placed finish and a Play-Off Final at Wembley, then the frustration of injury and the disappointment we all felt as a group last season,”

“I would like to take this opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to everyone at the club. And, of course, I would also like to wish the players, all the staff and the fans the very best of luck ahead of the brand new Championship season and for the future.”

While Kermorgant didn’t score that much this season, he scored twice in 27 appearances, he could still be a useful signing for someone. He has a veteran presence which could help younger strikers develop their own game while also being a known wind-up for defences across the country which help other players to get in and score the goals needed to win the game.

Reading’s next match will be against Fulham on the 14th July.
