Former Huddersfield and Middlesbrough defender training with West Brom

West Bromwich Albion have taken former Middlesbrough and Huddersfield defender Martin Cranie on trial, according to the Huddersfield Examiner.

Baggies boss Darren Moore is now tasked with securing an instant return to the top flight and Moore is looking at Cranie in an attempt to tighten up a leaky Albion back line.

Moore is on the lookout for Championship proven players in order to mount a promotion charge next season.

Cranie has experience of gaining promotion from the second tier after winning the Playoffs with Huddersfield Town in 2017.

He joined Middlesbrough in the January transfer window as a potential replacement for Cyrus Christie, but he failed to establish himself at The Riverside and was released at the end of last season.

This now leaves the defender without a club going in to the new campaign and he is hoping to earn a contract at The Hawthorns.

He played in the Baggies pre-season fixture against Barnet at the weekend, but it still remains unclear as to whether he will earn himself a permanent contract in the West Midlands.

Cranie has been capped at a variety of youth levels for England, but failed to make the step up to the senior side.

The 31 year old has spent the vast majority of his career in the Championship, making over 100 appearances for both Coventry City and Barnsley.

With it looking increasingly likely that Craig Dawson will depart the club this transfer window, Moore will need to act quickly in order to find reinforcements.

Martin Cranie could be the man to fill the void left by the outgoing defender next campaign.
