The Liverpool Echo has reported that Everton have strongly discussed the possibility of moves for Ben Gibson and Alfie Mawson.
Everton boss Marco Silva is keen to end the Toffee’s defensive woes and are targeting the Championships Ben Gibson and Alfie Mawson. Gibson, nephew of ‘Boro chairman Steve has been a long-term target for many top clubs in England, but his close ties to the club mean that any deal will prove difficult.
Could the clubs failure to secure promotion be seen as a sign that change is needed for Gibson? family loyalty is one thing but for a defender with the potential of Gibson, staying in the Championship could be a big mistake.
Mawson, however, was a rare glimmer of hope in Swansea’s dark campaign following their relegation from the Premier League and will be keen on progressing his career in the same state. Mawson may well be the easier alternative, but this could largely depend on the club’s current want-away defenders, Jordi Amat and Kyle Bartley, with the latter targeted by Leeds United, West Brom, and Birmingham City.
According to the WalesOnline – the situation with Mawson is “unclear” states majority shareholder Jason Levien. Contrary to recent reports, Levien did make a clear point of the clubs success in keeping Mawson in January, amid strong competition from West Ham.
The interest that comes around this time for Mawson however, is on the back of the clubs relegation and Mawson may feel that it is time for a change, in order to progress his career.
