Europa League side ready to take gamble on Middlesbrough striker

According to Get French Football News, Ligue 1 side Bordeaux are ready to step up their interest in Middlesbrough forward Martin Braithwaite. The striker joined the club on loan for the second half of last season.

Martin Braithwaite has been subject to interest from Lazio this week, but Gus Poyet’s Bordeaux have now joined the race to sign the Dane. The forward spent the second half of the season on loan at the French side, and scored four goals in nine starts.

It is believed that Bordeaux would have first refusal of the player, given his affinity with the club last season, but do face competition to secure the striker for next season.

Poyet may allow versatile striker Diego Rolan to leave Bordeaux this transfer window, with Getafe reportedly close to completing a deal. Braithwaite could be seen as a direct replacement for the Uruguayan international, and Rolan’s exit could speed up the process.

Middlesbrough will likely allow Braithwaite to leave the club, and will be looking to recover the majority of the £9 million they paid to Toulouse in 2017.

With two sides now vying for Braithwaite to join, a bidding war could help the player’s transfer fee increase significantly. Middlesbrough also would have been hoping for positive displays in the World Cup from the Danish striker in order to boost their valuation.

Braithwaite’s performance against France was extremely positive, and consequently started the following game against Croatia in the Round of 16, where they lost on penalties.

No bids are yet to be made, but it is difficult to see Braithwaite pulling on a Middlesbrough shirt for the start of the Championship campaign in August.
