Bristol City complete the signing of Derby forward

Bristol City have completed the signing of former Derby attacker and Austria international forward Andreas Weimann for a fee believed to be around £2m.

Weimann played a large part in Derby County’s successful campaign in 2017-18, in which the Rams finished in 6th place only to be narrowly beaten 2-1 over both legs of the Play-Off semi finals by eventual winners Fulham. Bristol City fans will feel optimistic about the transfer and will believe that the 26-year-old is a positive signing; a player who is still relatively young but can also bring an element of experience to a team who will be chasing promotion in the coming season.

Weimann cost Derby £3.5m when they signed him in the summer of 2015 from Aston Villa, with whom he racked up 129 appearances, including 113 in the Premier League. He spent three seasons at the club, including a year-long loan spell with Wolves.

Weimann spent the majority of his time at Derby playing as a winger, but Bristol City boss Lee Johnson has admitted that the club are “bringing him in primarily as a striker, who can also play wide if necessary.”

Bristol City are only a handful of days into their pre-season programme so the ex-Aston Villa attacker will have a lot of time to get to know his new teammates before the Robins’ first pre-season friendly of the summer, away at local side Bitton AFC on Sunday 8th July in the club’s annual community fund-raising fixture.
