Nottingham Forest join Premier League sides in chase for Benfica goalkeeper

Nottingham Forest have joined Newcastle United and Watford in the race to sign Benfica’s Bruno Varela according to a report from Portuguese publication Record.

Forest have already done some business with Benfica this summer having signed Joao Carvalho for a club record fee and Diogo Goncalves on loan last month. Some reports have stated that super agent Jorge Mendes has picked Forest as his next project after securing many of the players that helped Wolves get promoted last season. And now Forest are linked with another Benfica player.

This time reports are saying that they are interested in signing Varela from Benfica. The 23-year-old goalkeeper started his career with the Lisbon side but did leave for Vitoria Setubal before returning to Benfica just a year later. But now Forest are hoping to sign them as they look to do as much as possible to make sure that they finally get promoted back to the Premier League this season following a number of disappointing years.

But this may be one transfer that is too difficult to pull off for Forest. Firstly, this transfer is set to be very expensive with this report saying that Benfica want €15m, £13.3m in pounds, and that might be a bit too much considering the amount of money Forest have already paid out this summer. Also while Varela is almost sure to head to England this week, he would prefer a move to the Premier League and with Newcastle United and Watford interested, it seems like that one of those two sides would be his more likely destination.
