Manchester United close in on Championship goalkeeper

Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Stoke City goalkeeper Lee Grant, according to ESPN.

The 35-year-old is set to complete a dream move to Old Trafford and will become their third choice goalkeeper behind David de Gea and Sergio Romero. Grant’s move will also allow Sam Johnstone and Joel Periera to leave United on loan or permanently this summer.

Grant could not prevent Stoke City from being relegated to the Championship last season but was mainly used as back-up to Jack Butland. He joined the Potters in August 2016, initially on loan but the move was made permanent in January 2017 for around £1.3 million from Derby County. He made 28 appearances for Stoke in the 2016/17 season in the top flight.

He started his career with his home-town club Watford but never made a senior appearance for the Hornets. Grant had loan spells at Burnley and Oldham Athletic before signing for Sheffield Wednesday in 2007.

The experienced shot stopper spent three years as the number one for Sheffield Wednesday but moved to Burnley in 2010 for£1 million. After a further three seasons in the Championship with the Clarets, Grant then made the move to Derby County in 2013 on a free transfer.

He played 107 games for the Rams before making the move to Stoke. Grant is a talented goalkeeper and impressed many for the Potters after making the shock move in 2016. He is now set for another surprise move to one of the biggest clubs in the country in Manchester United, in what will raise a few eyebrows.
