OPINION: If Leeds United don’t spend big, another fruitless season beckons

This season has all the makings to be a great one for everybody associated with Leeds United.

The club have appointed the world-renowned Marcelo Bielsa as their Head Coach, the transfer targets the club have been linked with have been ambitious and exciting and furthermore, things off the field seem to be going really well with lots of exciting news, TV deals and a feel-good atmosphere around the club.

This season, the Championship looks to be slightly weaker than it has been in previous seasons and with the likes of Aston Villa and Derby County rumoured to be struggling at the minute, it could be Leeds United’s best chance to push for promotion to the top-flight for their first season back since they were relegated in 2004 from the division.

It’s no secret that the Championship is ultra-competitive and with all three relegated teams falling back into the Championship after being well-established Premier League sides, they’ll be looking to get straight back out of the division and the likelihood is with their parachute payments, they’ll want to spend big to go back up.

It’s clear the club are looking to bring in some exciting transfer signings, that they want to bring in some of the best players in the Championship and that they have laid down some huge markers for the future. To ensure that the club actually go up and earn promotion though, they have to ensure that these transfers actually materialize and they need to spend the money, otherwise, they can fall into the trap they have in previous seasons, struggling with mid-table mediocrity – although, spending big doesn’t mean a right to promotion, they just have to ensure that they spend the money on the best, proven targets in the division.

It’s clear if Leeds want to go up what they need to do, spend big, spend responsibly, reap the rewards.
