Former-Middlesbrough goalkeeper finds new club just days after being released

According to their official Twitter page, Cypriot side AC Omonia Nicosia have secured the signing of former-Middlesbrough shot stopper Tomas Mejias.

Former-Middlesbrough goalkeeper Tomas Mejias was only released from the club at the start of June, but the Spaniard has already found a new club. Cyprus First Division side AC Omonia have snapped up the free-agent just two weeks after leaving Teesside.

Mejias was seen as a cult hero at Middlesbrough. His penalty shootout heroics against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Capital One Cup in 2015 meant he was a favourite amongst Boro fans.

He came through the youth ranks at Real Madrid, playing for the C team and B team before making one appearance for the senior team under then-manager Jose Mourinho.

He signed from Real Madrid in 2014, originally on loan and later on a permanent deal at the end of the season under manager Aitor Karanka. Karanka had knew Mejias from his time as assistant-manager under Mourinho.

The goalkeeper didn’t have the best start to life on Teesside, making high-profile mistakes which ultimately cost Middlesbrough points. He suddenly moved down the pecking order, and was benched only to make appearances in cup competitions.

The performance away at Old Trafford was a stand out moment in the career of Mejias. But he also put in top performances as Middlesbrough beat Manchester City in the FA Cup and was Boro’s man of the match as they were knocked out by Arsenal in the Capital One Cup following the win over United.

He will join up with his AC Omonia team mates this summer, as they begin pre-season.
