Oxford United have signed experienced right-back on a two-year deal

Oxford United have further strengthened their squad with the signing of right-back Tony McMahon on a two-year deal, confirmed by the club website.

Oxford United have signed experienced right-back Tony McMahon following his release by Bradford City.

The former Middlesbrough, Blackpool, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United man has signed a two-year deal.

Ex-England Under-19 international full-back McMahon, 32, has made 401 career league and cup appearances.

Oxford United boss Karl Robinson said: “He is a strong character and a really good player”

“He got something like 18 assists last season from full back but is also sound defensively and he will do a great job for us.”

“The model here has been to bring in talented young players and develop them but to do that you also need good pros around them who know the game and have that hunger to win and compete in every match they play.”

Tony McMahon spoke about his move to Oxford United: “You look at Karl, Shaun Derry and Derek Fazackerley and not only do you have three great coaches you also have three great people to work with and be around and you know they are going to build a team that pushes for success here.”

“I’ve played at Oxford a few times – I scored a free kick here for Sheffield United- so I know the fans are great and that the facilities are excellent so I’m looking forward to getting out to Ireland next week and getting to know the lads and preparing for an exciting season.”
