Sunderland sign Scottish international goalkeeper

Recently relegated Sunderland have signed Scottish goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin following the departure of Jason Steele to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Steele’s departure to the Seagulls had left the Black Cats without a number one goalkeeper, but Sunderland boss Jack Ross has acted quickly to secure McLaughlin’s services.

The 30 year old has signed a two year deal at the Stadium of Light and becomes the clubs second signing of the summer transfer window.

McLaughlin is no stranger to playing in the third tier, having spent lengthy spells of his career at both Bradford City and Burton Albion.

Last season, the shot stopper made 33 appearances for Hearts and made 33 appearances in the SPL.

However, he rejected an approach to prolong his stay in Scotland as he favoured a move back to the Football League.

His impressive form for the Jam Tarts did not go unnoticed by Scotland manager Alex McLeish, who called him up to the National side in June.

He made his first appearance for his country on the 2nd of June in a 1-0 defeat to Mexico.

He gained a wealth of experience during his time at Valley Parade and the Pirelli Stadium, where he racked up 125 appearances for the Bantams and 133 appearances for the Brewers.

He helped Burton gain promotion to the Championship in 2016 and helped the club survive the drop the following season.

McLaughlin was a signing Sunderland needed to make going in to the new season and he will be a key component of Jack Ross’ squad as they look to mount a promotion push.
