England – Yorkshire and Football league roots at World Cup 2018

This is probably the most underwhelming England team in over a decade and some, the perfect blend of players who aren’t superstars and who have worked very hard to get to Russia. Many have had a taste of the Football League, more than you may expect. For those who know how hard the Football League is it makes the progress that much more special.

Fabian Delph, Jack Butland, Danny Rose – Leeds United

Leeds United could have had another ex-player in the ranks, or two if James Milner and Jake Livermore had gone to Russia but as it is two products of the academy and one ex-loan player have headed with the squad.

Danny Rose didn’t even play a senior game for Leeds United before he was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for the price of £1 million, yes just £1 million. Recent reports revealed he may have stayed if he had been given some first-team action but the central midfielder (he was at the time) brought in some money for the cash-strapped club.

Fabian Delph was arguably the best player to come through the Leeds United ranks in the last fifteen years. Lewis Cook and Ronaldo Vieira have both been compared and Cook certainly seems to have a bright future with the national side. Vieira is a two-time England winner in Toulon as well but they both have a lot to do to catch Delph. The Premier League winner recently gave the Elland Road fans the Leeds salute after the England game.

Jack Butland didn’t have a good spell with Leeds on loan but he isn’t the only one. Delph himself, Livermore and Ross Barkley all came from the Premier League and didn’t succeed on loan. Butland was willing to drop to the Football League to get some vital first-team experience and the hard work has paid off.

Kyle Walker, Gary Cahill, Harry Maguire – Sheffield United

Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire both came through the ranks at Sheffield United and both are now starters in the national team. Gary Cahill was loaned to the club a fair few years ago now and has captained England on various occasions.

Of the three Cahill has done the most, a Premier League and Champions League winners medal in his locker and a host of times as England captain.

Kyle Walker came through the Sheffield United ranks alongside Kyle Naughten and the pair of full-backs were soon taken to London and Tottenham Hotspur. As Naughten struggled Walker began to stake a claim to start and after impressing so much for Spurs he earned a £50 million move to Manchester City, now a Premier League winner nobody is questioning if he was worth the £50 million.

Harry Maguire had to work very hard to get where he is now. He was one of the most talented players to come through the United academy in a long time and he has progressed into a key England player. After moving to Hull and being relegated he has earned a move to Leicester City where he is now there most important defender.

John Stones, Kieran Trippier – Barnsley

John Stones came through the ranks at Barnsley and he is probably the biggest success story in the history of the club. After developing at the club he moved on to Everton and was then signed by Manchester City for another £50 million. He is now one of England’s most important players

Trippier spent time on loan at Barnsley and moved on to Burnley where he became a key player and eventually moved on to Spurs. He is now the first choice right-back for the side and has even fitted into the same England XI with Kyle Walker.

Nick Pope – York City

Nick Pope is a success story to say the least. Before the start of the season nobody really knew his name, now he’s in Russia with the England squad after a memorable campaign with Burnley where he helped the side to European football for the first time in over 50 years.

Jamie VardySheffield Wednesday

Although Vardy didn’t play any League football in Yorkshire he started his career at Sheffield Wednesday before being released. He has played non-league in Yorkshire but as a Wednesday fan it is common knowledge that he was gutted when they told him he wasn’t good enough.
