West Brom to rival Tottenham Hotspur for Colombian midfielder

West Bromwich Albion are set to take on Tottenham Hotspur in a bid to sign Colombian midfielder Wilmar Barrios, according to El Dia.

The 24 year old plays his football in Argentina for Boca Juniors and is currently away on international duty at the World Cup for Colombia.

Barrios is usually deployed as a holding midfielder, but can play anywhere across the middle of midfield.

Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily rumoured with making a move for the Colombian, but it is now being reported that recently relegated West Brom are interested.

The Baggies suffered relegation from the Premier League last season and Darren Moore is now tasked with building a squad capable of promotion at the first time of asking.

Barrios joined Boca in 2016, and he has gone on to make 41 appearances for the Argentinian club.

He has only netted on one occasion during his two year spell with the club, but his impressive performances have not gone unnoticed around the footballing world.

He was a part of Colombia’s Olympic side in 2016 as he helped his country reached the quarter finals.

He has also been capped on 10 occasions by the Colombian National side, and came on as a substitute against Japan on Tuesday.

West Brom have released Claudio Yacob this summer, and Grzegorz Krychowiak has returned to PSG.

Therefore, the Baggies have a shortage of defensive midfielders going in to the new season, and Barrios could fill the void.

The Colombian would be an excellent addition for West Brom, but with interest from the Premier League, they will have to work hard to secure their man.
