Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United legend Eddie Gray says the club has made a ‘big statement’ in appointed world-renowned coach Marcelo Bielsa as their new manager. Gray, who spent his entire playing career at Elland Road, has given his full backing to the Argentinian.
Bielsa has managed the likes of Athletic Bilbao, Marseille, as well as the national teams of Argentina and Chile. Gray believes his wealth of experience across the world of football can only be viewed as a positive for Leeds United. He believes everything is in place for them to have a real crack at promotion.
62-year-old Bielsa became the highest-paid coach in the history of the club, but Gray says everyone is looking forward to seeing the impact he can make,
“It’s a big statement that the club have made so fair play to the club.
“They went and got somebody who they think is at the top edge of the management tree and his record shows that.
“Obviously, everybody will be looking forward to it. It feels like a terrific. You look at his CV and it’s as good as anyone’s. He’s got a great reputation, he’s a powerful manager and I think he’ll run things as he sees fit and I don’t think there will be any doubt about that.”
Gray doesn’t envisage too many issues regarding Bielsa’s lack of English, maintaining that football is a ‘universal language’.
Finally, the 70-year-old club icon is adamant that it is a positive move by the football club to get Bielsa through the door,
“I think it’s best for the club, to get a manager with his reputation from the start to come to a Championship club.
“He said himself that it was a big opportunity for him and too good to turn down.
“Time will tell – but it seems a step in the right direction.”
