The Sheffield Star has confirmed that Stuart McCall is to be invited to be interviewed for the Doncaster Rovers job. However, both Mark Warburton and David Hopkin are no longer under consideration for the vacancy.
At the time of writing, league sponsors Sky Bet have made former Burton Albion, QPR and Northampton Town manager Jimmy Hasselbaink as the favourite to replace the departed Darren Ferguson at the Keepmoat Stadium. He is closely followed by McCall in the betting.
54-year-old McCall therefore is someone the Doncaster hierarchy wish to speak to. He has experience of this division having led Bradford City to the play-offs previously. He had been out of work since departing the Bantams for the second time earlier this year. Interviews began on Friday, and will continue on Monday. McCall is expected to be spoken to on one of these days.
Warburton has been linked with practically every EFL managerial vacancy going this summer at some stage. He left Nottingham Forest last year following a bad run of form with the Sky Bet Championship club. He guided Brentford out of Sky Bet League One in 2014, as we as winning the Scottish Championship title with Rangers two years later. Whilst he was linked with the role, that is no longer the case.
Hopkin has built a good reputation in the managerial game after guiding Livingston to back-to-back promotions over the last two seasons. He exited this summer and passed up on the opportunity to manage the club in the top flight of Scottish football. His name has been banded about with several jobs too, and he himself is now likely to manage in English football.
