Bournemouth have £10million Championship defender bid turned down

Sky Sports understands that Sky Bet Championship side Brentford have turned down a bid worth £10million from AFC Bournemouth for centre back Chris Mepham. The highly-rated Welsh international has been the subject of interest from the Cherries in the previous January transfer window, too.

The 20-year-old defender has battled his way into Dean Smith’s first team plans at Griffin Park. He will be hoping to start the new campaign in August at the heart of the back four. However, with a Premier League side sniffing around, it is perhaps still not 100% he will remain with the Bees just yet. Bournemouth could easily return with an improved offer for Mepham.

A bid worth £5.5million was tabled in January, but Eddie Howe was left disappointed as that offer too was rejected. The player made 23 appearances for Brentford last season, scoring once, which came in the 1-1 home draw with Sheffield United back in March. His displays at club level earned his recognition on the international scene too, as Ryan Giggs handed him his Wales debut versus China in the China Cup earlier this year.

Bournemouth are yet to add any new faces to their roster this summer so far. They received a big fee for Benik Afobe, who made his switch to Wolverhampton Wanderers permanent. Howe is understandably keen to invest that into adding new recruits. Mepham perfectly fits the DNA for the type of player the highly-rated manager looks for. With Brentford valuing the player much higher than £10million, it remains to be seen if an improved bid is to be produced by AFC Bournemouth.
