Bristol City linked with move for Sunderland winger

Bristol City are considering a move for Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady according to reports from HITC Sport.

The 32-year-old Rutherglen born wideman only signed a three-year deal on Wearside last summer but could be permitted to leave The Stadium of Light this summer with Sunderland set to slash their wage bill following relegation from the Sky Bet Championship.

It has now been suggested that Bristol City manager Lee Johnson could opt to submit a transfer offer for McGeady as he looks to plot a renewed promotion bid from his side next term.

McGeady started his career with Celtic where he made 252 appearances in all competitions in which he scored 37 goals. The winger was twice crowned The Bhoys’ Player of the Season while he also won the youth equivalent of the award on three occasions. McGeady won three league titles during his time at Celtic Park while he won both domestic cups twice.

After leaving Celtic, McGeady enjoyed spells with both Spartak Moscow and Everton before being loaned to Sheffield Wednesday and Preston North End.

Last summer, McGeady moved to Sunderland on a deal until summer 2020 but the club’s disastrous season has left the player’s long term future in the air. In his first year on Wearside, the midfielder made 37 appearances for The Black Cats in which he scored seven goals.
