Bolton Wanderers, Real Madrid and the Fifa World Cup – what’s the link?

After a remarkable day in football, ex-Real Madrid and Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fernando Hierro has ended up as the manager of the Spanish National Team, just two days before their Fifa World Cup game against Portugal on Friday night.

This news came after the Spanish Football Association sacked head coach Julian Lopetegui today after he was confirmed as the new boss of Real Madrid yesterday. Many football fans had been shocked that Lopetegui had been sacked, given the fact that it was so close to the biggest football tournament in the world and many felt that he should have continued in his position until the competition had ended, at least.

Ex-Bolton Wanderers man Hierro has been thrust straight into the managerial position to take Spain into the competition, just hours after Lopetegui had been sacked, making the move from his previous position as the Sporting Director of Spain.

Hierro enjoyed a glittering career with Lopetegui’s new employers, Real Madrid back in his playing days, He made 439 appearances for Real Madrid, which also included winning the Spanish top-flight on five occasions alongside three European cups.

Hierro finished his playing career with Bolton Wanderers during the 2004/05 season and despite the fact that he managed to get 89 caps for the Spanish National Team, the circumstances in which he has been appointed as the Spain boss are truly unique. What Hierro will bring to the Spanish National Team, nobody knows. Yet with Hierro being a relatively unknown managerial entity outside of a spell he had with Oviedo in Spain between 2016 and 2017, he has little to lose and everything to gain.
