Premier League sides battle for Charlton Athletic defender

Premier League sides Brighton & Hove Albion and Everton are battling to sign Charlton Athletic’s highly-rated defender Ezri Konsa, according to The Sun.

Despite finishing in a strong sixth position in League One this season, Charlton crashed out of the play-offs in the semi-finals, losing to Shrewsbury Town. With another difficult season in the third tier on the horizon, clubs in higher divisions are looking to poach the club’s best players.

Konsa, 20, looks to be a player with a bright future and could be tempted by a move to the Premier League in order to further his development.

The defender has spent his entire career so far with Charlton, breaking into the first-team at the start of the 2016-17 season. Following his debut against Cheltenham Town in the League Cup, he went on to make 39 appearances for the club in all competitions, mostly playing at centre-back.

Konsa, who has also been deployed at right-back and in midfield, made a further 47 appearances in all competitions this season, establishing himself as a key player in Charlton’s defence.

The defender has also had success on the international stage, winning the Under-20 World Cup with England in 2017. Konsa made his debut in the team’s semi-final win over Italy. Just last week, Konsa made his debut for England’s Under-21 side, keeping a clean sheet in a goalless draw against Mexico.

Charlton are thought to value Konsa at around £5 million, so it could be interesting to see what happens if Brighton and Everton are drawn into a bidding war. Konsa has two years remaining on his current deal but could be tempted by the offer of Premier League football.
