Birmingham express interested in Middlesbrough winger

According to Everything MFC, Birmingham have expressed an interest in signing want-away Middlesbrough flanker Marvin Johnson.

Gary Monk signed Marvin Johnson for Middlesbrough at the start of last season for a reported £2.5 million from Oxford United. However, he was very hit and miss on Teesside.

Johnson scored on his debut away at Bolton Wanderers, and started a string of games following. With the exception of the home tie against Queens Park Rangers, the winger failed to perform.

With Monk out of the door and Tony Pulis at the helm, Johnson only mustered a mere eight minutes of playing time under the Welshman. His cameo appearance came in the 1-0 home defeat to Fulham.

Garry Monk obviously likes what he sees when it comes to the former Oxford man, and believes he would be a good fit in his new side.

Birmingham survived by the skin of their teeth at the end of last season, and Johnson does have the ability to provide assists and goals from wide areas. However, it is his consistency which will be key.

Middlesbrough are struggling in wide areas, with Stewart Downing and Adama Traore the only natural wingers aside from Marvin Johnson at the club. With Traore attracting interest and Downing not getting any younger, Johnson could be seen as vital back up if an injury or transfer does happen.

If Birmingham are to bid for Johnson, it is likely Middlesbrough will be looking to recuperate the majority of the £2.5 million they spent on the winger. However, given the story of his season, this may be difficult, and could work in Birmingham’s favour.
