Sunderland eyeing up move for Peterborough United midfielder

Sunderland are weighing up a move for Peterborough United midfielder Marcus Maddison, according to the Daily Mail.

The Black Cats’ new boss, Jack Ross, is keen to bolster his squad ahead of next season in League One and is targeting a move for Marcus Maddison. Championship side Reading are also showing an interest in him.

The 24-year-old midfielder scored 12 goals in all competitions for Peterborough United this season but could be set to leave them this summer.

Maddison started his career at Sunderland’s North-East rivals Newcastle United but never broke into the first-team at St James’ Park. He was loaned out to non-league side Blyth Spartans before he was released by Newcastle in 2013.

He was then snapped up by Scottish Premier League side St Johnstone but never made a senior appearance for them. Maddison then moved back to the North-East to sign for Gateshead and scored 14 goals in 38 games for them.

Maddison then moved to Peterborough United in August 2014 and has scored 42 goals in 177 games for them ever since. He has become a key player for them and they will not want to lose him this summer.

Sunderland are hoping for an immediate promotion back to the Championship and the signing of Marcus Maddison would improve their chances. He is an established and proven League One player and would bolster their attacking options for next season.
