Promotion was always the aim says Sky Blues defender

Coventry City defender Jordan Willis has said that promotion is always the goal, after the Sky Blues defeated Exeter City 3-1 in the League Two Playoff Final.

The City academy graduate opened the scoring at Wembley when his shot from the edge of the area flew past a helpless Christy Pym.

Coventry wrapped up victory when Jordan Shipley and Jack Grimmer found the back of the net in quick succession shortly after.

It was the centre back’s second goal of the season and Willis admits that he has never scored a goal like it in his career.

Speaking to the club website, he said: “I have never scored a goal like that before in my life,

“It isn’t the worst place to score a goal like that really is it!

“I was up for a set-piece and we kept possession so I stayed amongst the forwards and to be honest I really didn’t expect Doyler to give it me where I was. My first touch was brilliant and then the finish was even better.

“I don’t really get in that position very often but I might try and get myself there more often,”

Promotion caps off a fantastic season for the Sky Blues who have gained instant promotion back to League One at the first time of asking.

Despite the financial strains at the club, Willis admits that promotion was always the aim going in to the League Two season.

“The important thing today was that we are promoted. It means everything to us and the fans.

“To respond to the relegation last season by coming back up straight away is fantastic. I am so happy that we have given the fans something this big to cheer about.”
