Presenting the inside scoop on the latest Football League news
Aston Villa

Villa owner makes statement about immediate future, and it is as sobering as they come

It’s not often in modern day owner comes out like Tony Xia has done in the last hour and reveal the sobering details of what losing one game has done to the football club. The revelations regarding FFP and how the club need to re-think their whole strategy are extremely concerning given the fact they couldn’t get out of the Championship by spending huge.

Villa pumped money into the playing squad and in the last hour their captain and most influential player has been confirmed as leaving the football club after failing to gain promotion back to the Premier League. John Terry will leave Aston Villa now after the defeat to Fulham. Terry was on significant wages for a Championship club and it reaffirms the fact that this league isn’t down to just spending money, so many things have to align and recruitment is so important, money doesn’t always work at this level.

Aston Villa were relegated to the Football League two years ago and everything pointed to the fact they would gain promotion. After just a couple of months this wasn’t so certain and Roberto Di Matteo was sacked, a Champions League  winning manager who couldn’t cope with the demands of the Championship. Villa need only look at what Newcastle did with a much smaller budget and a Champions League winning manager to realise how you can get out of this league.

“We are all aware that we will face severe FFP challenges next season. I am an Aston Villa fan. But I am also a businessman. Under the current circumstances, I think the club needs to rethink not only the past two years but also the past ten years. Villa needs to be a sustainable football club.”

This part of the statement from Xia is what the fans will probably focus on. It looks as though Villa will have a big task on their hands and player will have to leave before any come in, starting with John Terry. Others such as Jonathan Kodjia, Jack Grealish and Sam Johnstone will all have suitors and more importantly hefty wages that come out of the club.

Villa have gambled massively on players and some of the names who haven’t worked out and cost a serious amount of money in fees and wages will now have to offloaded. Ross McCormack is a prime example of how some transfers can go, a player who basically refused to train and play for the club but has cost them millions and millions of pounds. Other deals such as Scott Hogan, John Terry, Robert Snodgrass and Jonathan Kodjia may have worked here and there but as a collective it has failed.

The coming days and weeks will be interesting as Villa look to regroup and decide how to move forward. The future of Steve Bruce is in huge doubt after the statement, Villa fans seem unsure on whether he will stay.
