How much Aston Villa must raise this summer to avoid FFP sanctions

Birmingham Live reports that Aston Villa must raise at least £40million in player sales this summer to avoid breaking Financial Fair Play (FFP) guidelines. A football finance expert has told the source that the club are now paying the price for not winning promotion back into the Premier League.

It will be a third consecutive season in the Sky Bet Championship for Aston Villa following Play-Off Final defeat to Fulham at Wembley Stadium on Monday. Steve Bruce has already confirmed players will be sold, whilst his future is not for certain either.

Between ‘£40m and £45m’ is how much the club realistically need to recuperate this summer. The club essentially ‘gambled’ on big wages this season, something Newcastle United did last season, but they obviously won promotion. A ‘reality check’ is needed at Villa Park to avoid them falling even further into the red and breaking EFL rulings.

Several experts in this particular field claim it will be an extremely challenging and tough summer ahead for the Villains. Defeat at Wembley is likely to see several players move on. John Terry is all but certain to move on, whilst none of the previously on-loan players like Sam Johnstone, Robert Snodgrass and Lewis Grabban are likely to pen permanent switches to the club.

It is understood that Villa pay an average of £30,000-a-week in wages across their first-team squad, something which simply is not sustainable over next season, for their third campaign at this level. Players such as Ross McCormack and Micah Richards are still on the books receiving big salaries, but barely kicked a ball in anger for the club over the past year.
