Speaking to BBC Radio Shropshire (Shropshire Star article), Shrewsbury Town chief executive Brian Caldwell believes that manager Paul Hurst has been approached illegally by Ipswich Town. Following play-off heartache, Hurst is widely expected to be appointed at Portman Road in the coming day.
Caldwell has also expressed his disappointment at how the whole episode has panned out. The CEO even gave a subtle dig in the direction of Hurst, saying that ‘you’re looking for a bit of loyalty’. Nevertheless, Ipswich are set to get their man to replace the long-serving Mick McCarthy.
Hurst has since been given permission to speak to Ipswich about the vacancy, but it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth for Caldwell,
“I got a call from Paul’s agent yesterday morning, saying he’d had an approach from Ipswich.
“In the meantime, he had spoken to Paul and Paul had intimated he’d like to talk to Ipswich – we found out after that and I’ve got to be honest, that’s actually an illegal approach.
“Paul is an ambitious manager and wants to manage at the highest level possible.
“I’ve got to say I was disappointed, and I told Ipswich that yesterday.
“I do believe, in the past couple of weeks, stuff has probably gone on behind the scenes.
“In football there’s a lot of things behind the scenes, behind people’s backs, but sometimes you’re looking for a bit of loyalty.”
Ipswich have since rebuffed any suggestion of an illegal approach. They insist they ‘have conducted ourselves under EFL guidelines’.
