Rotherham United have been promoted to the Championship after a 2-1 win over Shrewsbury Town in the League One Play-Off final at Wembley yesterday.
The Milers took the lead in the first-half through defender Richard Wood, only for Shrewsbury to equalise in the second-half through Alex Rodman and take the game to extra-time. Wood then popped up again for Rotherham and they held out for a 2-1 win in extra-time.
Rotherham have achieved an immediate return to the Championship under Paul Warne. Their win yesterday also means that all three of the teams relegated from the second tier in the 2016/17 season, Wigan Athletic, Blackburn Rovers and Rotherham, have all been promoted back there from League One in this campaign.
The Millers overcame Scunthorpe United in the Play-Off semi-finals and faced a tough game against Shrewsbury Town in the final. The Shrews finished 3rd in the league and were confident going into the game. However, the Millers held their own and gained a famous win.
Their fans can now look forward to Championship football again next season. Here is how they reacted on Twitter to their famous win yesterday-
I've been thinking 🤔 pretty sure that's 3 times @w00dy16 has scored against the self proclaimed best keeper in league. 😂 😂 #utm #rufc

Still can’t believe it, never did I think we’d be at Wembley let alone getting promoted back in August! What a team, what a club – Rotherham United you beauties!! #UTM #RUFC

You genuinely can’t hate football. Today just shows you how emotional it can be, from going mental from Woods first goal, to going back nervous when shrewsbury scores and starts to get a few attacks in. Today was a rollercoaster of emotions. Absolutely love this club.❤️ #rufc
