Aston Villa have missed on promotion to the Premier League at the expense of Fulham.
Steve Bruce’s side lost the Play-Off final 1-0 at Wembley yesterday to the Cottagers. Tom Cairney’s goal in the first-half was enough to secure a return to the top flight for the Craven Cottage side.
Villa did pose more of an attacking threat in the second half but could not find an equaliser, despite having a man advantage for the last 20 minutes of the game after Dennis Odoi got sent off for the Whites.
Steve Bruce’s decision to sell Tom Cairney when he was manager of Hull City has come back to haunt the Villa boss. Cairney proved to Bruce yesterday why he should have kept hold of him in 2014.
Aston Villa will now have a summer of transition after missing on promotion to the Premier League. Next season will be their third in the Championship and they will look to compete end of the league again. Their fans will be disappointed after coming so close but there is still progress from last season and Villa are on the up.
Here is how their fans reacted to their defeat to Fulham yesterday in the Play-Off final-

Woke up still absolutely gutted! Premier league isn’t what people make out it’s all about the money!! Would rather win most weeks rather than getting hammered every week #avfc
