New Sunderland manager set to make first signing as Black Cats boss

New Sunderland manager Jack Ross is set to make St Mirren midfielder Kyle Magennis his first signing at the club, according to The Express.

Magennis spent last season with Ross at St Mirren and the new Sunderland boss is keen on bringing the midfielder with him to Wearside.

Ross and Magennis both helped the Scottish club gain promotion to the SPL from the Scottish Championship, and now Ross faces a new challenge in England’s third tier.

His first aim as manager of the Black Cats is to sign a midfielder that helped him to secure promotion North of the border.

The youngster is valued at £1m by the Scottish side, a fee which would eclipse their current record fee received for a player.

Magennis was highly influential in St Mirren’s promotion campaign last season, and he has been monitored by a number of clubs in the Championship and League One.

The 19-year-old made 27 appearances for the Buddies last time out, scoring on two occasions.

Since his début for the club in 2016, Magennis has made 52 appearances in professional football, notching 5 career goals.

His current contract with the Saints runs out in 2020 after Ross tied him down to a new deal last summer due to his impressive performances at the Paisley 2021 Stadium.

With it looking increasingly likely that Paddy McNair will be sold in the summer, Magennis could go straight in to the Black Cats starting eleven and make a name for himself in English football.

Jack Ross will be looking for an instant return to the Championship and Magennis could be the first of a number of new faces at the Stadium of Light this summer.
