National League top scorer completes League One switch

Sky Bet League One side Walsall have today announced the signing of striker Andy Cook from Tranmere Rovers on a two-year contract. The 27-year-old was top scorer in the National League last season as he helped Rovers back into the EFL via the play-offs.

Whilst Tranmere manager Micky Mellon wanted Cook to spearhead his attack on their return to Sky Bet League Two, the player himself wishes to test himself at the highest possible level. Walsall are said to have beaten off plenty of interest to snap up the former Barrow forward.

Cook netted 26 goals last season in the regular league campaign to propel Tranmere into the play-offs, which culminated in a dramatic Promotion Final triumph over Boreham Wood at Wembley. He is relishing the challenge ahead,

“I can’t wait to get started. I’ve scored 51 goals in the last two years at National League level and now I want to prove myself in the EFL.

“This is a big step up to a big club. I know the manager from his time at Wrexham and I know what he is about; I’m excited by the challenge and where he wants to take the club.”

His new manager, Dean Keates, is a long-term fan of his latest recruit,

“He’s somebody I’ve admired for a long time. As soon as I got the job here and knew he was out of contract; I made him my primary target. I’m delighted to have gotten this over the line as there were plenty of clubs in for him – his record speaks for itself – and I’m looking forward to working with him. I have no qualms about him stepping up to League One.”

As for Mellon, whilst he is sad to lose a prized asset, he understands why he moved on,

“We’d have loved to have Andy with us for our first season back in League Two but we recognise his desire to test himself at a higher level and we hope he is as successful at his new club as he was with us.”
