Middlesbrough confirm player departures from the club

According to Middlesbrough’s official website, Martin Cranie and Tomas Mejias are amongst 10 players who will leave the club this summer. Cranie and Mejias are the only first team players to be released, along with several under-23 players and academy prospects.

Tomas Mejias will end his four-and-a-half year stay with Middlesbrough, after signing from Real Madrid. His time has been hit-and-miss to say the least, with costly errors in his first few Championship games leading him to warm the bench for the rest of his time at the club.

However, he did enjoy success as Middlesbrough’s goalkeeper in cup competitions. He played a starring role as Boro beat Manchester City at the Etihad, and was the hero in the penalty shootout win against Manchester United a year later.

Martin Cranie has also been released, after just five months on Teesside. He signed from Huddersfield Town in January of this year, but has been a bit-part player for the Reds since arriving. He made nine appearances, with just one start to his name.

Along with Cranie and Mejias, several academy and under-23 prospects are also set to depart the club. Tom Brewitt, Matthew Eldson, Liam Hegarty, Jakub Senior and Robbie Tinkler have not been awarded new contracts from the U23 set up.

The latter featured on our five Middlesbrough academy prospects to watch out for, but he has not been given the opportunity to continue at his boyhood club under Tony Pulis.

Academy players Liam Cooke, Kieran Storey and Jay Wilson have also not been offered professional contracts.
