Former Leeds United midfielder attempts to hijack Whites’ transfer plans

Former Leeds United midfielder Harry Kewell has attempted to hijack Leeds United’s attempts to sign 21-goal winger Gavin Whyte from Irish side Crusaders, according to reports coming out of Northern Ireland.

The Australian manager is currently in charge of Sky Bet League Two side Crawley Town, and the Belfast Telegraph have reported that the first move has been made by the fourth tier side, with Kewell making “a sizeable verbal offer.”

Despite interest from Leeds United and a number of other Football League clubs being reported, this is the first contact that the Irish club have had with any English teams over the signing of the 22-year-old winger.

Gavin Whyte does look set to leave the Irish champions this summer, after guiding Crusaders to their second successive Irish Premier League title.

His performances saw him pick up two awards at the Northern Ireland Football Awards night, winning the Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year.

Gavin Whyte is yet to make an appearance for the senior Northern Ireland team, but he is tipped by many to earn a call-up to Michael O’Neil’s squad for the tour of Central America this summer.

He has previously made five appearances for the Northern Ireland Under 21 side.

Considered as one of Northern Ireland’s brightest prospects, Whyte has been at Crusaders since 2013. The Belfast-born winger has previously stated that Leeds United midfielder Stuart Dallas is his idol, having played for the same club as Whyte before he completed his move over to England.
