Leeds United set to miss out on Moroccan international

Leeds United are set to miss out on FC Utrecht and Morocco midfielder Zakaria Labyad, as the player edges closer to signing a deal which will take him to Dutch footballing giants Ajax.

Reports in the Netherlands (via FootballInsider) suggest that Labyad, who has been involved in 27 goals in all competitions this season is set to move to the Dutch side ahead of a number of other interested clubs, including Leeds United.

There had been reports in previous weeks that Leeds were set to make a move for the Moroccan after he impressed Leeds United representatives when he was watched.

At the time, the Leeds staff would have been watching Polish midfielder Mateusz Klich, who was on loan at FC Utrecht for the second half of the season, but Labyad caught the eye, and Leeds were said to be looking to bring the Utrecht star to Elland Road.

However, it seems they have missed out, and they will need to start looking elsewhere, as a “verbal agreement” has now been reached between Labyad and Ajax.

One similar style player that Leeds United could look to bring in instead is Peterborough United star Marcus Maddison.

The former Gateshead man was transfer listed yesterday as part of an agreement made with Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony when the two negotiated a new contract last summer.

Marcus Maddison has proven himself time and time again in the third tier, and he is deemed more than ready to make the step up to the Sky Bet Championship, but Leeds must act quickly, as he is also wanted by a number of other clubs.
