Sheffield Wednesday announce retained list

Sheffield Wednesday have announced their retained list with new offers being given to a host of players.

The club confirmed on their official website that just the three players would leave the club upon the expiry of their contract.

Defender Glenn Loovens leaves the club after five years of service. In that time, the centre-back made 127 appearances for the Owls in all competitions. He joined the club from Real Zargoza after impressing on a short trial stint.

Ross Wallace also leaves the club after arriving from Burnley on a free transfer in 2015. The wide man was a key figure under former boss Carlos Carvahal as the Owls reached back-to-back Sky Bet Championship play-offs.

Jake Kean also leaves the club after failing to make a start for the Owls. Instead, the 27-year-old has made his name in Sky Bet League Two with two different loan spells. Mansfield Town took the goalkeeper last season whereas the shot-stopper has found his way to Grimsby Town this season. Kean has found game time hard to come by this season at the Mariners and has made only just one appearance.

The club have offered deals to Atdhe Nuhiu, Sean Clare, George Hirst, Dan Willis, Warren Clarke and Jack Lee.

It appears that Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay is putting his faith in youth with the majority of the contracts offered to young players on the fringes of the squad this season.

Derby loanee Jacob Butterfield has returned to the Rams after failing to impress at Hillsborough as well as Vitoria defender Frederico Venancio returns to the Portuguese side.
